Start with one useful question.

AN EXTRACT FROM AMBITION THAT WORKS

What would a satisfying
working week look like?

When Alex pictured success, he pictured being a director. When he described a week he would enjoy, he mentioned solving technical problems, having time to concentrate and getting home in time to cook.

He had not included managing a department.

That did not rule out leadership. It gave him questions to investigate before making it his destination.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Work hard.
Stay curious.
Keep perspective.

Tim Sturdy’s working life has been shaped by responsibility, change and bringing people together to get things done. In construction, he has led teams and complex projects in the UK and New Zealand.

Those experiences taught him the value of patience, trust, sound judgement and treating people fairly. They sit at the heart of Ambition That Works.

Away from work, Tim enjoys the open road and has spent more than thirty years skiing in the Tyrol. A long European road trip brought together his love of driving, discovery and taking the less obvious route—and helped shape Appia Adventures.

A rewarding life needs room for curiosity, adventure and the people who matter.

01

Describe a satisfying working week

When Alex pictured success, he pictured being a director. When he described a week he would enjoy, he mentioned solving technical problems, having time to concentrate and getting home in time to cook.

He had not included managing a department.

That did not rule out leadership. It gave him questions to investigate before making it his destination.

02

Define success beyond a job title

A title can represent achievement, income, influence or belonging. It can also hide a job you would dislike. Ask which responsibilities and freedoms you actually want, then investigate whether the role provides them.

03

Identify the values you want your choices to reflect

Most people approve of fairness, creativity and security in the abstract. Values become useful when a decision puts them under pressure. An organisation’s response to a concern can tell you more than its published values.
